Bad defaults on macOS for preferences “Download folder” and “Record folder”

After a new install on macOS, the default folders for two settings in Jami Preferences > General seem to be not what I would expect. These are the settings with problematic defaults:

  • Conversations Download folder: ~/Documents
  • Call recording Record folder: ~ (/Users/roryokane)

Here is a screenshot of Preferences with those values for those settings:

I haven’t used Jami to call yet, but based on the labels for those preferences, I would assume these meanings:

  • The Download folder is where files are saved if the person you are chatting with sends you an arbitrary file, such as a spreadsheet file.
  • The Record folder is where recordings of everyone’s video and audio feeds can be saved after a call, as either a video or audio file.

If those assumptions are correct, I think these should be the default folders:

  • Conversations Download folder: ~/Downloads
  • Call recording Record folder: ~/Desktop

A screenshot of Preferences with those corrected values:

I chose Desktop for the Record folder because it could be either video or audio, and macOS programs conventionally don’t store new files in the user’s home folder. So Desktop is a generic place where the user can notice the new file and move it to the correct place. If the Record folder only saved video or only saved audio, I would make the default Record folder ~/Movies or ~/Music (since macOS has no generic ~/Video or ~/Audio folders).

I’m on macOS Mojave 10.14.6. I’m using the non-App-Store install of Jami, “Version 1 (20200409)”.
